Happy Wife, Happy Life Was Terrible Fucking Advice

By Bonita Raven

I was in a restaurant — the kind with linen napkins and a waitress working a double — and I watched a woman send her salad back. Not because there was a hair in it. Because the dressing was 'wrong.' She'd asked for it on the side. It came on the side. It was simply, in her professional opinion, the wrong vibe of balsamic.

Her husband sat there holding her handbag on his lap like a prisoner of war clutching his last ration. The waitress apologized for a crime she didn't commit. And the woman turned to her friend and said, with total sincerity, 'He just never makes me happy anymore.'

Sweetheart, he's holding your purse. What else do you want? Should he chew your lunch for you too?

Who sold you this slogan?

'Happy wife, happy life' sounds cute on a kitchen sign. In practice it's a job description: man, your full-time role is keeping her mood at an acceptable temperature. Fail, and the whole household suffers. Nobody signs up for that job on purpose. They get drafted.

And here's what crappy wives miss: it's terrible for YOU, too. You've handed the steering wheel of your own joy to someone else and then you're furious about the driving.

I grew up too broke for this kind of crisis

Where I come from, you didn't get to have an emotional breakdown over vinaigrette. You got up, you went to work, and if you wanted your life to be better, you got off your ass and built it. Nobody was coming with a bouquet and a five-year plan for your self-actualization.

That lesson served me in every chapter of my life — the glamorous ones and the boring ones. I married a man I adore, and I still don't expect him to manufacture my happiness like he's assembling IKEA furniture with one of those little Allen keys.

He married a woman, not an unpaid complaint department.

Interesting women are happy-ish on purpose

The happiest wives I know have something going on that has nothing to do with their husbands. A class. A side hustle. A friend group that doesn't double as a grievance committee. A body they move because it feels good, not to punish it. They come home with stories. Stories are sexy. Complaints are not.

And — funny thing — when you're responsible for your own good mood, his efforts start to feel like a bonus instead of a performance review. Suddenly the man holding your purse looks less like a hostage and more like a gentleman.

Tip the waitress, too

Do one thing this week purely because it lights you up. Not a cushion. Not a scented candle. Something real. And for God's sake, if the dressing is a little off, eat the salad and tip like a decent human being.
