"Men Like Sex" Is Not What You Got Out of My Book. It's What You Went Looking For.
By Bonita Raven
Bonita writes as a literary persona. Illustrative scenes are fictionalized, not documented client cases.
Somebody read the whole thing and came back with this.
"All she said is that men like sex, that's not a revelation."
That's it. That's the review. Ninety-some thousand words, and she came back with a headline off a magazine rack.
Let's be honest about what happened here, because it wasn't a misreading. A misreading is careless. This was deliberate. She walked through that book the way a burglar walks through a house — not to see the place, but to find the one thing small enough to carry out the door. And she found it. One sentence. The one sentence that lets her shut the cover and keep her life exactly the way it is.
Men like sex. Not a revelation. No kidding it's not a revelation, sweetheart. Nobody said it was news. It's the single fact you've been rehearsing reasons to ignore since your honeymoon. The book was never trying to reveal it. The book was trying to make you stop using it as your alibi — the thing you point at when you don't want to look at anything else.
Then she said it. The flinch. The little doorway out.
"What about if she had kids, then what?"
There it is. That's the tell. That is the entire move in five words, and I want every wife reading this to sit in it for a second and recognize it, because you've all done it.
Here's what you don't understand, and here's why that question insults every mother who ever opened this book and felt something move:
It was never "the kids or me." He never asked for that trade. He wants you and your children together. That's the whole thing. Watching you be a mother is one of the reasons he wants you, not a reason he can be dismissed. You are the woman who gave him those kids. You are the house those kids live in. He is not choosing between his children and his wife's body — he loves the two of them in the same breath and you know it, which is exactly why you reached for that question instead of answering the real one.
NONE of this changes. NONE of it.
And then the part that actually made me angry. She said it like the children excuse it. Like more life given up means less desire owed.
He wants you the same as he wanted you before the kids. He wants you more, because now he's watched you earn it. The man has poured his entire life into one pile — the house, the bills, the years, the version of himself he traded away — and the more he gives up, the more he needs to be wanted. That isn't greed. That's arithmetic. That's what happens inside a man who has put everything in one place and needs to know the place is warm.
And you want to call that "men like sex." Like it's a taste, like it's a preference, like it's a hobby he should have outgrown. You just described the beating heart of the book and called it a snack.
You found the exemption
Because here's what you actually did. You found the exemption. That's the whole thing — the very thing this book spends three hundred pages asking you to stop doing. You went hunting for a loophole that would let you off the hook, and when you found one you dressed it up as criticism and felt smart. That's the move. It's the oldest move, it's the laziest move, and I have watched a hundred women make it while telling themselves they were being discerning.
You did not misunderstand the book. You understood exactly enough of it to need a way out, and you took it, and you tied a bow on it.
So learn to read
Not the good version of it. Not close reading, not theory. Just read it. Slowly. Out loud if you have to, the way you'd read a recipe you keep getting wrong.
Because the book was never about what men like.
The book was about you. Ya dumb bitch.
Perspective and humor, not therapy or medical advice.
Less marital bullshit. Something you can actually do.
