You Studied Your Air Fryer Harder Than Your Marriage

By Bonita Raven

Let's start with the receipts. You watched eleven YouTube reviews before you bought that air fryer. You compared basket capacity. You read the one-star reviews to see what the haters had to say. You know it does a better crispy chickpea at 390 than 400, and you will tell anyone who stands still long enough.

Now tell me what your husband fantasizes about. Tell me the last thing that made him laugh so hard he had to put his drink down. Tell me what he wanted to be at twenty-two, before the mortgage got him.

That silence you're hearing? That's the sound of a woman who studied the appliance and skipped the man.

I didn't have a magic vagina. I had a notebook.

People assume a woman in my old profession got by on some secret anatomical advantage. Darling, please. The thing that made men come back — and tip like they'd lost their minds — was that I paid attention. I remembered the guy who loved old jazz. I remembered the one who wanted to be teased about his terrible taste in ties. I remembered the one who mostly wanted a woman to look him in the eye while he told a story and actually seem to enjoy it.

That's not a sex trick. That's a research habit. I was a professional student of men, and the curriculum was embarrassingly simple: notice what lights him up, then do more of that when you genuinely feel like it.

Fucking study him, bitch. Not like a parole officer. Like a woman who finds him interesting.

Crappy wives study him for evidence, not for fun

Here's the twist. Plenty of crappy wives DO study their husbands — the way a prosecutor studies a defendant. They know every time he forgot the recycling. They have a mental spreadsheet of his conversational sins dating back to the Obama administration. They could testify.

That's not curiosity. That's surveillance. And nobody ever got horny under surveillance.

The questions nobody asks after year five

Real curiosity asks things you don't already know the answer to. Ask him what he'd do with a free Saturday and no obligations. Ask him what he thinks you don't know about him. Ask what he misses about the early days — and then don't defend yourself, just listen. Ask what he's never told you he wanted because he figured you'd laugh.

And then — this is the part crappy wives skip — tell him what YOU like. You're allowed to have a wish list. You're allowed a wig, a dirty joke, a fantasy, a ridiculous idea for an anniversary. Curiosity runs both directions or it's just an interview.

What this is not

This isn't about grudgingly doing things you hate because you read that men need them. Duty sex is about as erotic as a tax audit, and he can tell. The point is to find the overlap — the stuff you'd BOTH enjoy and somehow stopped trying — and to get enthusiastic about it again. Enthusiasm was my whole business model. It can be yours for free.

So put down the air fryer manual. Pick up the man. He's been sitting right there the whole time, wondering if you'd ever get curious.

Perspective and humor, not therapy or medical advice.

So which crappy wife are you, darling?

Eight questions. You'll learn more about your marriage than you did from the air fryer manual.
